Application Submission

To request authorization to test for a mechanic or parachute rigger certificate, you must submit this form to your local Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) or International Flight Standards Office (IFO) and request an appointment with an Airworthiness Aviation Safety Inspector (ASI), who will review and process your application.

  • Applicants who have been issued an authenticated document from an FAA-certificated Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS) and military applicants issued a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the Joint Service Aviation Maintenance Technician Certification Council (JSAMTCC) do not need additional FAA authorization to begin the mechanic certification testing process.
  • Applicants who hold a foreign aviation authority license or certificate for performing and approving aircraft maintenance may apply for an FAA mechanic certificate based on having obtained the requisite practical experience (see 14 CFR part 65, § 65.77), and must follow the Application Submission instructions above.
  • All applicants for a mechanic certificate must meet the eligibility requirements of part 65, Subpart A-General, and Subpart D-Mechanics, to include passing all applicable tests (i.e., § 65.75 and 65.79.

Additionally, the FSDO or IFO can answer general inquiries concerning the use of this form and provide additional information on obtaining mechanic, parachute rigger, and repairman certificates or ratings.

  • To report a change in your name, nationality, citizenship, or gender, you must complete an application form applicable to the certificate being changed (e.g., FAA Form 8610-2 for a mechanic or parachute rigger certificate) and follow the Application Submission instructions above.
  • The applicable Title 14 CFR regulations for obtaining a mechanic certificate or parachute rigger certificate include part 65, Subpart A-General, Subpart D-Mechanics, and Subpart F-Parachute Riggers.
